How to choose & be awesome at a career that you're passionate about
I spent years of my life changing jobs, and trying to fit in to different industries with various roles and working in several different countries. After these experiences in my life, I am so convinced that one of the only ways to truly be happy - and at the same time successful - in your work is by doing something that moves you.
With that in mind, I am now really close to finally finding my calling in life in terms of work that makes my heart jump.
Follow your intuition
I finally made the change from working a conventional office job to becoming a freelancer on Upwork and working on my own terms.
I can't exactly say that I am there yet, but I feel that I am very close to reaching my work goals. Here are a few things that I found helpful when going after my dream job.
I once read a book called the 4 hour workweek by Tim Ferris which explained how to best find your passion. It talked about digging deep into your thoughts and making a decision about what truly made you happy in terms of work. I soon enough created my own version of this. It might have taken a bit of meditating and trying several times but at the end, I was closer than ever to my dream job. I was happier working from home as a freelancer instead of working a regular 9-to-5 and I was making more money too!
Don't give up!
Steve Jobs once said “If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”
The truth is, you will go through a lot of ups and downs. I personally changed my mind a million times. First, I wanted to make a good living while working a full time job, then I wanted to be an entrepreneur, then I realised that I was going to have to give up a lot of time and it was risky, so I changed my mind again to wanting to build a small business... You get the picture, I finally found some stability in my current job but it wasn't easy reaching this stage in my life...
Don't be afraid to ask for advice
We often feel weird about asking others for help. But it shouldn't be the case. After all, we've got nothing to lose and It's always good to listen to what the people who are the most close to you have got to say. They probably know you the best and so might give you advice based on their knowledge of your character. Then again, if what you need is a specific type of career advice or else you are not satisfied with the advice of those around you, a mentor or a career coach might be a perfect idea. Below is a guide to finding a life coach
that can help you in a lot of areas in your life.
Finally, knowing what you want to do in your career life and being able to follow it through is not an easy thing. It can be very risky, as well as hard work.
You'll have to be persistent...
On the other hand, if you truly go down that road and do some awesome things, you'll be more happy and fulfilled than ever before.
once said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I found this to be very true throughout my career journey!
